S-112 Introduction to Chainsaw Operations

Date: April 20 – 22, 2026 Location: April 6-19, 2026 - Online, April 20-22, 2026 – Field Days (3) (1. Oxford, MD 2. Mardela Springs, MD and 3. Bozman, MD)

Tall Timbers Research Station, founded in 1958, is a leader in fire science and prescribed fire training. Its research has shaped modern fire management, and it continues to advance regional and national programs with innovative curricula and collaborative approaches to fire management.

Course Description

Introduction to Chainsaw Operations is a blended course that combines Online Training (OLT) and Instructor-Led Training (ILT) to prepare students to safely and effectively perform the duties of a Basic Faller (FAL3). The course is aligned with the NWCG Standards for Wildland Fire Chainsaw Operations (PMS-212) and is designed for entry-level firefighters with little or no previous chainsaw experience.

Objectives

  • Perform a procedural size-up and determine assignment complexity.

  • Recognize how to maintain work area and cutting area control.

  • Describe how to maintain effective communication and coordination with saw teams.

  • Recognize the impact of human factors on chainsaw operations.

  • Identify the major parts and components of a chainsaw.

  • Demonstrate safe chainsaw operation practices, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and completion of safety checks.

  • Demonstrate safe chainsaw handling techniques, including starting and stopping procedures, proper body position, and managing reactive forces.

Course Content

Online Training: ~4 hours of asynchronous learning to be completed on the Wildland Fire Learning Portal (WFLP) within the two weeks prior to the ILT session.

Instructor-Led Training: 3 full days (April 20 - 22. 0800 – 1700 ET).

Cost

$150 due upon acceptance into the course. Instructions will be provided regarding payment.
