Course Description
This blended course combines three foundational NWCG courses: S-130 (Firefighter Training), S-190 (Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior), and L-180 (Human Factors in the Wildland Fire Service). Delivered in a blended online format, this training provides a comprehensive introduction to basic wildland fire suppression techniques, wildland fire behavior, and the role of human factors in fire line safety and decision-making.
Objectives
Demonstrate a foundational understanding of wildland fire behavior, including the influence of fuels, weather, and topography on fire spread and intensity.
Apply fundamental wildland firefighting principles, including fireline construction, suppression tactics, use of firefighting tools and equipment, and the safe operation of suppression resources.
Recognize and apply essential firefighter safety concepts, including the Standard Firefighting Orders, Watch Out Situations, risk management, situational awareness, and safe operations in both wildland and Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) environments.
Utilize effective communication, briefing, and information-sharing practices while working within the Incident Command System and as part of an organized firefighting team.
Demonstrate an understanding of human performance principles, emphasizing teamwork, professionalism, decision-making, and personal accountability in dynamic, high-risk operational environments.
Recognize the importance of maintaining personal health, fitness, and resilience while working in arduous and hazardous wildland fire conditions, including smoky environments.
Course Content
This is a blended learning format course that is structured in two components:
Online Training (OLT) – Self-paced coursework available online through the Tall Timbers Fire Learning Portal.
Instructor-Led Training (ILT) – In-person, instructor-led field exercises designed to reinforce and apply the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the course.
